NEWSWEEK Declares War on the Bible (and Biblical Christians)

The Bible continues to be the most controversial book on the planet.  It has been maligned and misrepresented.  It has been belittled, banished, and burned.  Yet, it remains the bestselling book of history.

I have just finished reading a hatchet-job in the current issue of Newsweek magazine. Newsweek pictureThat’s right, Newsweek is back in print, but the current cover story is a shameful excuse for journalism.  It is infuriating how a once “respectable” news journal could pass off such a blatantly biased attack on the Bible and biblical Christians.

Kurt Eichenwald, who normally writes on business and financial subjects, brings us an article entitled “The Bible: So Misrepresented It’s a Sin.”  There is really nothing new about the arguments he throws at Scripture.  Dan Brown makes the whole subject at least excitingly readable in his novel The DaVinci Code (which is another slam job against biblical Christianity).  Eichenwald warms up the standard brew of Constantine and Koine Greek, lost manuscripts and ministerial malpractice.  Any serious student of Christian apologetics could refute his charges easily.  Of course, no such opportunity is allowed.  The Bible and evangelical Christians are skewered in unbelievably one-sided fashion.

The arguments Mr. Eichenwald presents are nothing new.  But, the caricature of Bible-believing Christians is shocking.  Here’s the way the article begins:

They wave their Bibles at passersby, screaming their condemnations of homosexuals. They fall on their knees, worshipping at the base of granite monuments to the Ten Commandments while demanding prayer in school. They appeal to God to save America from their political opponents, mostly Democrats. They gather in football stadiums by the thousands to pray for the country’s salvation.
They are God’s frauds, cafeteria Christians who pick and choose which Bible verses they heed with less care than they exercise in selecting side orders for lunch.

Why did Newsweek magazine allow such an insulting and in-your-face article?  Here are a few observations:

1. The anti-Bible, anti-Christian forces are smelling blood.  Can you imagine an article describing Muslims with such venom?  The current social climate has declared open season on Christian-bashing, and this article is a prime example.  Newsweek printed it because they felt they could get away with it.

2.  Once again, the push in on to rid the world of Judeo-Christian truth.  It has risen and fallen in the past.  This is the kind of propaganda that has salted the pages of history before.  It is here again.

3.  The real issue is not the Bible, but rather the One who is at the center of the Bible: Jesus Christ.  Spiritual darkness has always sought to put out the light.  The attack on the Bible and Christians is really a refusal to know and love the Son of God.

So what shall we do?

While men like Kurt Eichenwald slam the Bible, we must love it.  NOTHING TAKES THE PLACE OF SIMPLY READING THE SCRIPTURES DAILY.   Mr. Eichenwald does make one statement worth repeating.  He says most Christians follow “a book they seem to have never read.”  He proclaims, “America is being besieged by Biblical illiteracy.”

Let’s change that!

READ IT.  In under 30 minutes a day, you can read through the entire Bible in one year.  That’s about 3 1/2 chapters a day.  Get a plan.  You can find one in the YouVersion app.

MEMORIZE IT.  That’s right.  You can do it.  Hide it in your heart.  It is gold!  Try one verse a week — or one verse a month.  Just do it.

MEDITATE ON IT.  Think about the beauty and majesty of God as described in His Word.

Believe me.  If you and I give ourselves to loving and living the Word of God, He will pour out blessing beyond our imagination.  And that’s the truth.
