April 10. Reading and Leading Up to Easter. John chapter 16.

The Source of Our Confidence

Confidence is an incredible quality.  It arises from the absolute certainty that what we are doing or saying is correct and called for.  Confidence makes us courageous.  When we lose it, we are hesitant and uncertain of ourselves.  Doubts fill our hearts bringing insecurity and fear.

One of Jesus’ strengths was the certainty that the Father’s hand was on Him.  He was resolute and decisive.  He remained this way even when everything was falling apart around Him.

John 16:32-33 tell us:  32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

“I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.”  Yet within 48 hours, He would be dead.  How could He say this!?  Jesus was not self-confident.  He was Father-confident – “the Father is with me” – “I am not alone.”

Too often our confidence rests in our own limited capabilities.  This is a set-up for disappointment.  But, steadfast assurance in God’s Word, God’s character, and God’s grace will never disappoint us.

We can have unshakable joy!
