“One Year Bible” New Testament Passage
I Corinthians 10:14-33
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we, though many, are one breadand one body; for we all partake of that one bread. I Corinthians 10:16-17 (NKJV)
COVENANT is a theme that runs through the entirety of Scripture. God always operates on the basis of covenant. He is the covenant-making and the covenant-keeping God.
Covenant goes beyond just a simple agreement or contract. The idea of covenant flows out of absolute truthfulness and the INABILITY to ever break your word. It is a vow that says, “If ever I should break my covenant, let me die.” Covenant is strong. It is the ultimate commitment.
The result of COVENANT is COMMUNION. Covenant produces unity. We are tied together in an unbreakable bond. It is stronger than death! This is the way it is between us and the Lord, the way it is between and husband and wife — between brothers and sisters in the Kingdom of God.
The Lord’s Supper is a covenant meal which we call HOLY COMMUNION. By the shed blood of Jesus, the covenant has been cut. We drink INTO this covenant and enjoy all it’s benefits. The bread is the body of the Lord. While His physical body was not literally divided, yet the spiritual Body of Christ is broken into a million pieces – you, and me, all believers everywhere.
As we drink the cup, we reaffirm the covenant in which all our sins are washed away. As a result we are ONE WITH THE LORD. As we eat the bread, we reaffirm the covenant in which Christ has bound us together as His Body. Though we are many, yet WE ARE ONE.
Covenant produces communion. These two — covenant and communion — are rare commodities in our world. If you belong to Jesus, you have been brought into a covenant with God. That is different from anything the world has to offer.
