“I am the Resurrection”
We have reached the mid-point of the Gospel of John. We read today of the central truth of the Christian faith: RESURRECTION. Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, but also points to a larger resurrection – in fact, two resurrections: His own and ours.
It is worth our time to unpack the significance of Jesus raising his friend Lazarus from the dead. It was both a dramatic display of miracle power and a crucial step in provoking confrontation with Jerusalem’s religious establishment. In fact, John tells us that, as a result of this miracle, “from that day on, they (the chief priests and Pharisees) plotted to put Him (Jesus) to death (John 11:53).” In essence, they said, “That’s it! We can’t let this go on anymore!”
Jesus is marching inexorably toward the Cross. He knew it! He knew that He had come “to give His life a ransom for many” (Matt. 20:28). This explains the unusual delay in coming to heal Lazarus. He was setting up a display of His glory that would end in salvation for many.
If God delays, it is always for a reason. Resurrection can only happen after a death – not before.
Easter is about the Resurrection of Jesus. It also points to our resurrection. Psalm 30:5 says, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Jesus points out the key element in our ability to receive and walk in His miracle power: BELIEVE. In verse 40 He speaks to you and me, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”
His part is POWER TO RESURRECT. Our part is BELIEVE in the only One who can truly and finally help us. Let’s do that today.
